This 147-year-old courthouse was damaged in a fire on April 23, 2019, which took several hours to extinguish. The roof, attic and second floor that housed the courtrooms were destroyed.
Selected by Loudon County, Johnson & Galyon became part of the team tasked to rebuild and restore the courthouse, using the bones of the structure in its rebuilding as well as preserving the historic windows. The first phase was the stabilization of the exterior structure, which included a temporary support structure, temporary roofing system and mold remediation. Once inside, refurbishing the interior included the creation of numerous samples of new materials to match the old finishes. In addition, upgrades were added for efficiency, aesthetics and safety.
Several challenges were encountered, such as COVID-19, supply chain shortages, record levels of rainfall and an infestation of honeybees. After six years of careful study, planning and construction, the Loudon County Courthouse officially reopened in April 20205. The end result is a modern courthouse with a historic feel.
