Beginning his career in the construction industry in the late 1970’s, David came to Johnson & Galyon in 1983.  He earned two degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.  The first was in business administration in 1975, before earning his second degree in civil engineering in 1983.

Smith’s career project list is extensive and includes projects like Episcopal School of Knoxville, Parkwest Medical Center, Mountain Loft Condominiums (Gatlinburg), Powell Middle School (renovations and additions) and several Webb School of Knoxville projects.  He also directed the successful completion of the technically challenging Knoxville Transit Center project, a LEED certified initiative which spans a four lane urban highway.

David is a registered professional engineer.  He is past president of the Associated General Contractors of Tennessee as well as the Knoxville chapter.  A current board member of both the Resource Valley Construction Training Council and Work Force Connections, Smith serves as the Program Advisory Committee of the City of Knoxville Equal Business Opportunity Commission.

David currently serves on the Northside YMCA Board of Directors and previously served on the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Knoxville Board.

He and his wife, Lucy, have two children – Ryan and Hayley.
